During the 50s, a cruel ‘Vendetta’ between two native families left 7 victims behind, causing everybody to flee. And the troublemaker? Guess… a goat’s bell!
The deserted village you’ll discover while trekking this gorge, and its mystical-like atmosphere, is ideal for wandering about the abandoned buildings and relics of the traditional and local architectural style.
Today, Aradena – home to the tallest bridge in Greece – is a point of reference for anybody who loves bungee jumping (the second tallest bridge for bungy in Europe) and its gorge belongs among the deepest and steepest ones – with a depth of 138 meters.
It offers you one of the most natural breathtaking sceneries in the district.
As you approach the exit, you’ll land right at the deep blue Libyan coast.
There, you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of the beach Marmara, before we board a private boat and set sail towards the famous fisherman’s village Loutro.
This otherwise unreachable little village, with its white and blue charm, is perfect for getting some rest, while appreciating a delicious meal.

We start our adventure with a comfortable transfer to Aradena, passing through scenic landscapes of Crete’s southwestern region.
Before we begin the hike, we take a moment to explore the abandoned village of Aradena. Wander among the forgotten ruins and hear the legendary tale of the village’s vendetta, caused by something as simple as a goat’s bell.
Our descent into Aradena Gorge begins! This awe-inspiring canyon, one of the steepest in Crete, leads us through dramatic landscapes, towering cliffs, and untouched nature. With a depth of 138 meters, the gorge is a true geological wonder.
The hike lasts 2 to 3 hours to complete this 7-kilometer gorge.
Reaching the gorge’s exit, we arrive at Marmara Beach, a stunning cove with crystal-clear waters of the Libyan Sea. It’s the perfect spot to cool off, swim, and relax before the next part of our journey.
We board a private boat and set sail towards Loutro, a charming fishing village that can only be reached by sea. With its whitewashed houses and serene atmosphere, Loutro is a picture-perfect destination for unwinding.
Enjoy your free time in Loutro! Swim in the calm bay, wander through the picturesque streets, or indulge in a traditional Cretan meal by the water.
After a day of adventure, we board our boat until Chora Sfakion (Sfakia), where your LOCI SUV awaits to take you back from a different breathtaking route, through gorges and mountains.
